A lot of deceitful solar companies out there are claiming you will receive 30% or your total purchase for solar back as a check from the IRS. 

FAKE STATEMENT!

You will only receive a 30% tax credit back from the IRS.  A tax credit is an amount that taxpayers can subtract directly from the taxes they owe. This is different from a tax deduction, which lowers your taxable income. You will receive no money back from the IRS.

 Net metering is a billing program between you and your utility company that allows you to send excess solar electricity back to the grid and receive bill credits for it. When your solar panels produce more power than you're using, the extra energy goes to the utility, and you can sometimes earn credits at the retail rate. These credits then reduce your future bills, which is helpful when your solar production is lower, such as at night or during cloudy days.   However, some electric companies have added extra fee's to their customers if they go solar, and some electric companies have stopped net metering all together. Some states require homeowners and businesses to obtain a liability insurance policy of $1,000,000 before solar can be installed. This protects the homeowner in the event of a power outage in the electrical grid system, and the homeowners solar system back feeds into that grid causing injury to a line worker. You will never have a zero electric bill when you remain on the electric company's grid system. You may reduce your electrical costs, but the electric company will add fee's and service charges to your bill which makes it impossible to have a zero electric bill.
